Allergies are your body’s reactions to foreign substances that typically do not cause any harm to your body. When your body identifies foreign substances like pet dander, dust mites, pollen, etc (i.e. allergens), the immune system will release antibodies to fight the identified allergens, even though they aren’t actually harmful to your body.
When your immune system kicks in and reacts to allergens, the inflammation that occurs in the skin, airways, sinuses, or digestive system are typically called allergic reactions. While it varies from individual to individual, symptoms of allergic reactions can be as minor as sneezing and having stuffy noses, to major and life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis.
There are many types of allergies: drug allergies, food allergies, insect allergy, latex allergy, mold allergy, pet allergy, and pollen allergy. While there is usually no treatment or cure for allergies, it is ideal to identify your allergies and take the necessary measures to avoid all known allergens for the best of health.
