The COVID-19 real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) test is a qualitative detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2 in upper and lower respiratory specimens (such as nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs, sputum, lower respiratory tract aspirates, bronchoalveolar lavage, and nasopharyngeal wash/aspirate or nasal aspirate) collected from individuals suspected of COVID-19 by their healthcare provider. The real time RT-PCR technique is highly sensitive and specific and can deliver a reliable diagnosis of COVID-19. The COVID-19 RT-PCR test in Malaysia is the current gold standard diagnostic tests conducted at government health facilities and private laboratories to detect the presence of the Covid-19 virus in the patient's body.
